Obama cements Afghan stay year after Bin Laden's death
Bombs and gunfire have struck the Afghan capital Kabul... shortly after a visit by Barack Obama. The Taliban claimed responsibility and said the attacks were in retaliation for the US president's visit. Afghan police say suicide bombers attacked a compound where foreign workers live. At least seven people have been killed and almost 20 injured. The US president's visit to Kabul came one year since the killing of Osama Bin Laden by American special forces. In a speech at Bagram airbase, Obama admitted Washington is holding direct talks with the Taliban and said many in the terrorist group are interested in peace. Obama and Karzai also signed an agreement outlining ties in the decade after the planned US troop pullout in 2014. RT's Gayane Chichakyan has more. Exit Rush: No cash, no Afghanistan?
There's been a surge of violence in Afghanistan - with bomb blast in the north of the country killing at least nine people. The escalation comes as the country prepares to take full control of security in more areas - and a week before NATO's summit in Chicago. And, as Tesa Arcilla reports, Alliance support for ongoing involvement in the embattled nation has never been lower. The Taliban Spring - Afghanistan
Taliban resurgence led by biggest attacks since 2001 To see more go to www.youtube.com Follow us on Facebook (goo.gl or Twitter (www.twitter.com The Taliban have claimed that yesterday's attacks on Kabul, the biggest since 2001, are just the start of their spring offensive. This incisive report asks: what does a future with the Taliban mean for Afghanistan? "For them it's not a peace process", Amrullah Saleh, former head of Afghan Intelligence tells us. A Taliban prisoner concurs, "if the foreign troops leave, the Taliban will come back to Kabul". Saleh is adamant that the Taliban's "maximalist agenda" will lead to civil war once the West leaves Afghanistan and that the Afghan government participating in empty talks serves no other purpose than political expediency. "Peace talks with the Taliban have always been used to demonstrate to the international community that President Karzai is one step ahead", Fawzia Koofi explains. An MP and single mother, she refuses to be cowed by Taliban aggression, despite facing death threats. A classified Nato report, based on 27000 interrogations, not only states that the Taliban believe their control of Afghanistan is inevitable, but also highlights the links between the Taliban and Pakistan. For many in Afghanistan there is real anger that after so much bloodshed in the country, Pakistan is left untouched. As the West searches for the ending to its Afghan story, for Afghanis it feels like they are just reaching another beginning. April ...

The US soldier accused of a massacre of Afghan civilians will be charged with 17 counts of murder and six of assault and attempted murder. Staff Sergeant Robert Bales is currently held in solitary confinement at a military detention center in the US and could face the death penalty if convicted. Earlier this week his attorney said there's a lack of evidence against his client and he has no memory of incident. Meanwhile the Taliban has already vowed to take revenge against American forces, saying it doesn't trust a US court to deliver justice. Jim Brann from Stop the War Coalition says Washington privately views Afghanistan's leaders dismissively - a policy it follows in dealings with other countries. Barack Obama, the US president, has expressed his deep sadness, and has offered his condolences to the families of the victims.
