MaximsNewsNetwork: UNFPA WORLD POPULATION REPORT: THORAYA AHMED OBAID,
MaximsNewsNetwork: 18 November 2009 - UNFPA: A United Nations report urges policymakers to heed the role of women - who make up the majority of the poor - in combating climate change. Climate change strikes it fiercest blow against the poorest, most vulnerable people around the world, according to a United Nations (UN) report launched today in London, urging policymakers to heed the role of women who make up the majority of the poor in combating climate change. Poor women in poor countries are among the hardest hit by climate change, even though they contributed the least to it, said UNFPA Executive Director Thoraya Ahmed Obaid at the launch in the Royal Society of London headquarters. The UN Population Fund (UNFPA) report warned that the poor depend more on agriculture for their livelihoods, risking hunger and loss of income when droughts strike, rains become unpredictable and hurricanes move with unprecedented force. The poor also tend to live in marginal areas, vulnerable to floods, rising seas and storms, noted The State of World Population 2009 UNFPA report, stressing that women bear the disproportionate burden of climate change as they make up the majority of the worlds 1.5 billion people living on less than one dollar a day. The report contended that the international communitys fight against climate change would be more successful if policies, programs and treaties consider the needs, rights and potential of women. It spotlighted studies showing women are more ...

MaximsNewsNetwork: STATE OF WORLD POPULATION REPORT UNFPA, THORAYA AHMED OBAID
MaximsNewsNetwork: 18 November 2009 - UNFPA: The latest edition of the State of World Population report by the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) shows that women bear the disproportionate burden of climate change, but have been largely overlooked in the debate on how to address problems of rising seas, droughts, melting glaciers and extreme weather. The report will be launched Wednesday 18 November in London. The 2009 edition of the State of World Population report, to be launched on 18 November 2009 by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), shows that women bear the disproportionate burden of climate change, but have so far been largely overlooked in the debate about how to address problems of rising seas, droughts, melting glaciers and extreme weather. Poor women in poor countries are among the hardest hit by climate change, even though they contributed the least to it, according to UNFPA Executive Director Thoraya Ahmed Obaid. The poor are especially vulnerable to the effects of climate change, and the majority of the 1.5 billion people living on $1 a day or less are women. The poor are more likely to depend on agriculture for a living and therefore risk going hungry or losing their livelihoods when droughts strike, rains become unpredictable and hurricanes move with unprecedented force. The poor tend to live in marginal areas, vulnerable to floods, rising seas and storms. Research cited in the report shows that women are more likely than men to die in natural disasters ...
