About This CD/DVD: In the month of Ramadan of the year 899 [June 1494] and in the twelfth year of my age, I became ruler in the country of Ferghana. Thus begins the remarkable autobiography of Zahiruddin Muhammad Babur, whose journey of conquest through Afghanistan and Hindustan—the northern part of the Indian Subcontinent— laid the foundation of the Mughal Empire. Fusing cultural influences from Persia, Central Asia, and India, the Mughals created a brilliant intellectual and artistic efflorescence whose legacy remains strong today. In 1858 with the abdication of Emperor Bahadur II and the establishment of the British Raj, Afghanistan became a buffer zone between the Russian and British Empire. Following the rise of Soviet power in Central Asia in the 1920s, the once porous border between Central Asia and the Subcontinent hardened. In a modern day encore of the Mughal artistic synthesis, six cosmopolitan-minded musicians from Central Asia, Afghanistan, Northern India, were brought together by the Aga Khan Music Initiative with the aim of merging their musical instruments and traditions to create new sounds. In recent times Homayun has become known around the world for his virtuosity and mind blowing improvisations during his Rabob performances. Homayun Sakhi and Salar Nader have been collabarating together for the past 4 years and you can notice that as their chemistry on stage brings audiences to a roaring applause and ultimate enjoyment. Both Homayun and Salar are Afghans who have both been practicing Classical music and Traditional folk music of Afghanistan from their childhood. Both artists belong to strong lineage of Master artists; Homayun Sakhi being a student of Ustad Mohammad and his father Ghulam Sakhi and Salar Nader student of world reknowned Ustad Zakir Hussain.
