Afghanistan's Karzai to US Troops: Leave Our Villages

Karzai 'accepts' Taliban office in Qatar
Hamid Karzai, the Afghanistan president, has said he will accept the opening of a Taliban office in Qatar for the purpose of holding peace talks. If the United States insists that the armed group establish a liaison office in Qatar, "we are agreed", Karzai said in a presidential statement on Tuesday. Earlier this month, Kabul recalled its ambassador to Qatar for consultations over reports that the Taliban was planning to open an office in the gulf country. As the 2014 deadline for the US led forces to pull out nears, there has been a growing need to engage the Islamists for a durable peace in the country. It has been identified that a proper address for Taliban will help facilitate the talks. The US and its NATO allies have been pursuing a war against the Taliban, but the armed group remains a force to be reckoned with, despite a decade of war. One complication to negotiations with the Taliban is that many Afghans still view them with suspicion and say they should answer for their past crimes. Al Jazeera's Jennifer Glasse reports From Kabul.

Karzai under fire for killings by US soldier in Afghanistan
www.euronews.com Anger at the killing of 16 civilians by an American soldier was also directed at Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Tuesday, after his two brothers were attacked as they visited the site of the massacre. The pair were shot at as they met with local people at a mosque nearby. Security officials were onhand and no one was injured. The area of Panjwai is a Taliban stronghold and part of a supply route. The attempted attack on the president's brothers underscores how hard it is for Karzai's administration to control the situation, especially with anti-US sentiment already high after recent riots over a koran-burning incident at Bagram airbase. The American soldier responsible for the killings could face the death penalty under the military justice system, though there is still no word on whether he will be tried in the US or Afghanistan. Speaking from the White House, US President Barack Obama said: "We are heartbroken over the loss of innocent lives. The killing of innocent civilians is outrageous and it's unaceptable. It's not who we are as a country and it does not represent our military and for those reasons I have directed the Pentagon to make sure we spare no effort in conducting a full investigation." British Prime Minister David Cameron is due to meet President Obama on Wednesday to agree that both countries end their 'lead combat' role in Afghanistan by the middle of next year. Karzai wants early exit for ISAF troops
www.euronews.com Afghanistan's President, Hamid Karzai, has called on NATO to end its military mission in his country a year early, in 2013. It comes as the Taliban announced it is pulling out of fledgling peace talks in Qatar with the United States, describing Washington's stance as the main "obstacle" and blaming "shaky, erratic and vague" US statements. Tense relations have dropped to a new low after a rogue US soldier on Sunday gunned down 16 civilians in the volatile southern province of Kandahar. In response, the US and Afghan authorities have agreed that international security forces must pull out of Afghan village outposts and return to larger bases. Washington has also tried to calm tensions by flying the suspect out of the country but many voices in Kabul want the soldier to stand trial in Afghanistan. The Taliban and Karzai's statements are a serious blow to NATO however some Western politicians may welcome calls for the withdrawal of foreign combat troops a year early.
