So this is a documentary that has been 13 months in the making. Every aspect of production was done entirely by soldiers from the Pennslyvania National Guard. We spent 9 months in the Kunar province of Afghanistan, a place much more hostile than I think any of us expected. We adjusted quickly. Kunar Provincial Justice Officials Visit Naray District, KRTA News Story
Provincial officials from Asadabad, Kunar traveled to Naray district in the north, and over the three-day trip provided legal training to the Naray and Ghaziabad district shuras and local justice officials. Officials announced plans for Naray district to begin holding public trials, and the news story features the arrest and investigation of bootleggers. Aired on Kunar RTA (Radio Television Afghanistan) on 22 February 2012, as well as on other radio outlets. Two journalists accompanied the delegation, as well as two US State Dept. representatives. The visiting officials included: Kunar Chief Prosecutor; Chief National Security Prosecutor; ANP Criminal Investigation Division Chief; NDS Director; Asadabad Primary Court Chief Judge; and the Kunar Governor's Rule of Law Advisor. Kunar -- Acquittal at dramatic trial attended by Kabul justice officials. KRTA news report.
Top justice officials form Kabul, representing the Supreme Court, Attorney General's Office, and Interior Ministry accompanied US officials to Asadabad, Kunar Province to recognize Kunar officials' accomplishments and attend a public trial of an alleged fuel thief. This 17 March 2012 KRTA news report covers the VIP visit and the public trial. Conflicting testimony at the trial led to a dramatic acquittal, and the presiding judge ordered an investigation into possible misconduct by police and the alleged victim of the theft. KRTA then broadcast the entire, 45 minute trial (Pashto language), which can be viewed on youtube at youtu.be Here is a translation of the news report on the trial (starts at 5:40 of the clip): Gul Mohammad got release during a public trail that he was accused in oil theft while he was an accountant in an oil station of the Haji Mohammad Rasool of Nawabad Asadabad Kunar province. A public trail held in the city court of Asadabad of Gul Mohammad son of Khawas who was accused in stealing of above twenty nine laces Pakistani rupees while he was working with a privet oil station in Nawabad, during the trail the secertry of the case explained the case that was collected from the attorney department and then prosecutor Mohammad Hasham said that Gul Mohammad has been accepted all the clams and his crime and demanded for sentence for him according to the criminal law article (#459-6-7)but in the other hand the accuser's defense lawyer Baz Mohammad Sadeq called <b>...</b>

Video Belongs To Cnn In the deadly valley of Kunar Kunar, Afghanistan — Kunar province, on Afghanistan's eastern border, is as alluring to outsiders as it is unwelcoming. It's a key transit route for militants from Pakistan. But it's also been the scene of some of the fiercest fighting for US troops in the 10-year war. In a tiny outpost, Pirtle King, troops test mortars against an insurgency that is rarely seen but frequently attacks from all sides. And further south, the road between Pirtle King and the next city is almost impassable because of the insurgency. It was here that a US unit experienced its worst losses: a roadside bomb killed four soldiers. "When I walked up to it there was a pair of legs leaned out crossed over that were hanging out of one of the doors," remembers Lt. Ryan Petersen, with the 2nd Battalion, 27th Infantry. "That's always stuck with me. ... If I ever think about it at night or ever dream about it, that's the first thing that comes into my head." Some here say they're glad that the US now has a clear timetable for departure and are glad it's ending. "My gut feeling now is that it is good. That it is time to be done," Petersen says. "I think that we've done as much as we can. We've done what we've done here and it's time to be done." A few days after the losses here, the unit dropped $3 million in bombs in just 24 hours. That stopped the attacks — for five days.
