The Jackal or MWMIK (pronounced EmWimmick) or Mobility Weapon-Mounted Installation Kit is a family of vehicles designed and developed by Supacat Ltd at their factory in Honiton, Devon (UK) for use by the British Army. The primary role of the vehicle in the British Army is deep battlespace reconnaissance, rapid assault and fire support - roles where mobility, endurance and manoeuvrability are important - and it has also been used for convoy protection. Small production runs are manufactured at the Honiton factory but larger batches are manufactured by Plymouth based company DML (part of Babcock Marine Services, owned by Babcock International Group). The initial order was for up to 100[1] and it was announced on June 27, 2008 that the MOD would be ordering a further 72. On Jun 23, 2010 it was announced by the Ministry of Defence that 140 additional Jackal 2 vehicles were being ordered, and according to the same source this would bring the number of Jackals in service up to 500. The MWMIK can carry increased payload and fuel compared to its predecessor, allowing it to carry greater amounts of additional equipment and protection over longer distances, and it is able to support itself and its crew for distances of over 497 mi (800 km). Inside The Kandahar Massacre; Grieving Survivors Describe Afghan Mass Murder
March 28, 2012 SBS "Dateline" received unprecedented access to the survivors and investigation of the Kandahar village massacre by US forces. Grieving survivors describe Afghan massacre; US military war crimes & Genocide against Pashtuns in Afghanistan Reporter Yalda Hakim of Australia's SBS network has become the first western journalist to visit the villages where a US soldier allegedly killed 17 people. In a remarkable report she talks with some of the survivors and some Afghan guards on duty at the military camp from where Staff Sergeant Robert Bales left on his alleged killing spree. The video at the top of this story is Hakim's account of her journey to the remote villages near Kandahar and what she was told. Bales is now held at Fort Leavenworth in Kansas and has been charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder. The events of that March night in a rural area some 20 kilometers from Kandahar are being investigated by both the US military and Afghan authorities. But much remains unknown. Many Afghans, including some of the survivors that night, believe more than one US soldier was present in the two villages where the killings took place. Others speak of seeing a single American soldier leaving Camp Belambai that night The US military says there is no evidence that more than one man was involved in the shootings. His weapon is hit and he turns and runs out the door (look for sparks when rounds hit his weapon). He is killed when he runs outside (this happens off camera). Insurgents inside the house shoot the AA soldier through holes in the front of the building. The Special Forces soldier neutralizes the threat. Training makes all the difference.

Currently in Afghanistan, there are 121000 US contractors and 68000 US troops. As a result of the coming surge, another 30000 troops and 56000 contractors are expected. But US lawmakers are afraid that the mistakes that plagued military contracting in Iraq will be repeated in Afghanistan. Will the shadow armies be required to protect the Afghan civilian population? What are the chances that military contractors could cause major damage to Americas mission in Afghanistan? Will the Obama administration be able to prevent the waste, fraud and abuse seen in Iraq? In a globalised world, perhaps it was inevitable that private companies would become major players in diplomacy. But the fact is that contractors are doing the job that the State Department, Pentagon and CIA once did on their own. Recently the CIA announced that it had stopped using Blackwater (now known as Xe Services) to conduct raids and other special operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, but some press reports say Xe Services are still at the center of a secret program in Karachi, Pakistan, where they plan assassinations of suspected Taliban and Al Qaeda members, among other operations. In this episode, we examine the role of US military contractors in Afghanistan as the US widens its footprint there. Story The French army on Friday (October 8) released footage of intense fighting in the Tagab Valley in Afghanistan, where coalition and Afghan forces are battling militants. The army did not provide many details, but said the footage was shot from October 1 and that the action was part of Operation Promising Star. On Thursday (October 7), a German soldier was killed and six were wounded in a suicide bomb attack in northern Baghlan province, the German Defence Ministry said. Two of the wounded were in a serious condition. Forty-nine French soldiers have been killed in violence or accidents in Afghanistan since the 2001 US-led invasion, from a total of 2133 foreign soldiers killed.
