Ustad Shaukat Hussain Khan (1930-1996) The late Ustad Shaukat Hussain Khan ranked amongst the finest musicians of South Asia. Apart from his prowess over the solo repertoire, the maestros forte was his impeccable accompaniment. Gharana: Punjab & Delhi Teachers: Pandit Hiralal & Mian Qadir Bukhsh James Kippen Professor of Ethnomusicology at the University of Toronto wrote about Ustad Shaukat Hussain on his website as follows: "My former doctoral student Lowell Lybarger had the good fortune to study with Shaukat Hussain Khan in Lahore. Sadly, Shaukat Hussain died of a protracted illness in January 1995, right in the middle of Lowell's fieldwork. Nonetheless, Lowell managed to learn wonderful material from this man whom everyone described as a kind and entirely dignified gentleman. Shaukat Hussain was the accompanist of choice for Pakistan's great vocalists and instrumentalists, and he always offered impeccable support. As a soloist one hears the Delhi roots of his sound mixed with a truly Panjabi sense of rhythmic complexity (he also learned from Qader Bakhsh). One can hear this complexity in the varied internal phrase lengths of pieces and in the tal structures. This excerpt is taken from a solo in Lachmi tal (cf. Lakshmi), but here it is not the 18-matra version but a 21-matra version. Shaukat Hussain plays a char-darje-ki-gat (compare this to Nabi Bakhsh's one played by Pawan Kumar Verma)."

Shaukat Ali live on atv morning show. Shaukat Ali was born in Malikwal, Punjab into a family of musicians. He received his musical training from his elder brother, Enayat Ali. He sang for the first time onstage when he was a student at Government College, Lahore. He began his career as a professional singer by participating in radio programmes. Gradually, he became popular among the people of Punjab. He is well-known for his high-pitched renditions of folk and national songs. He is also a poet who has written the lyrics to a number of his songs. Both urban and rural dwellers alike appreciate his tappas and his dastans of Mirza Sahiban, Saif-ul-Maluk and Heer Ranjha for their emotional depth. He also sings ghazals (a light classical form) with equal ease. When television was introduced, Shaukat Ali quickly became popular. He has travelled widely as a cultural ambassador of Pakistan and received numerous awards.

Nashad was born Shaukat Ali in Delhi, India, in 1923. He received his early academic education in a local high school in Delhi. He learned to play flute. He moved to Bombay. He made his music debut under the name Shaukat Dehelvi in 1947 action film 'Dildaar'. Director: Shev Raj, Lyrics: CM Muneer, Cast: Sagina, Yashonat, Dev Radha and Deepak. He put his name as Shaukat Husain to compose for the 1948 film 'Jeenay do'. Banner: J. Hind Chitra, Director: AF Keka and Majeed, Cast: Monica Devi, Pana Laal, Haresh, Ratan Piya, Laila Gupta and Shanta Kanwar. He put his name as Shaukat Ali to compose for the 1948 film 'Payal' In 1948, he also composed songs for film 'Tutay taray' as Shaukat Dehelvi. Released under the banner of Sheikh Mukhtar's film production unit called 'Omar Khayyam films', Director: Haresh, Cast: Shamim Banu and Moti Laal. In this film, he composed Bahadur Shah Zafar's ghazal 'Na kisi ki Aankh ka noor hoon'. In 1949, He composed music for actor-director Yaqoob's movie, 'Aiye'. Cast: Yaqoob and Silo Chena Cheterji. In 1949, Nashad put his name as Shaukat Husain Haideri and composed songs for film 'Dada'. Amazing playing by the maestro who, as displayed in this Tabla solo, was a phenomenal and complex mathematician in theoretical Tabla and an expert in melody which can be heard in the tonal quality and sur in his hands. Ustadji was a disciple of Pandit Heeralal Ji and Ustad Miyan Qadir Baksh. He is noted as the greatest Tabla player of Pakistan and is often referred to as the Emperor of Tabla. Some of his most famous disciples include Ustad Sajjad Ali, Ustad Raza Shaukat, Ustad Ajmal Hussain, Ustad Jimmy Khan, and the famous Ustad Tari Khan. Ustadji was instrumental in the art of accompaniment, both for Ghazals and classical and semi-classical music. He set the standard for Tabla players all over the world. Ustadji's prowess over Tabla solo is still a refreshing treat for Tabla connoisseurs. Shaukat Ali Khan is a Pakistani folk singer, well educated in modern education as well as music. He is the younger brother of Ustad Inayat Ali Khan, another famous fanqaar of Indian Subcontinent. Born into a family of artists in Malakwal, Ali began singing while at college in the 1960s, receiving help from his elder brother Inayat Ali Khan. Since 1970 he has performed ghazals and Punjabi folk songs and given countless hits like Jagga, Challa , kadi te has bol, teri lal parandi, etc etc. He gave a live performance at the 1982 Asian Games in New Delhi, and is a very popular singer on both sides of border. He has been awarded the highest Pakistani civilian Presidential award. His song "Kadi te Has Bol Ve" was used in the movie "Love Aaj Kal". His son Imran Shaukat is following in his footsteps. This presentation is created and Uploaded as a dedication to Ustad Shaukat Ali Khan and for the music connoisseurs of Indian subcontinent. This is my humble effort to rekindle the common musical and cultural flame of an eternally common spirit of music that binds the people of Indian subcontinent and our world at large, in spite of it's political boundaries.
