Afghanistan Massacre Fallout
Via The Washington Post: "The Army staff sergeant accused of massacring Afghan civilians while they slept was providing security at a remote base for special operations forces that were teaching the Afghans how to defend themselves. While the soldier had no special operations training, his alleged actions deal a blow to the elite outreach program — called "Village Stability Operations" — which the US says is key to handing off security to Afghans and keeping the Taliban at bay...".* The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur breaks down the potential fallout from the shootings - will a withdrawal of troops come sooner than expected and end the year that began over 10 years ago? www.washingtonpost.com Subscribe to The Young Turks: bit.ly Find out how to watch The Young Turks on Current by clicking here: www.current.com The Largest Online New Show in the World. Soldier accidentally shot rules inquest 22.05.12
A coroner has ruled that a young soldier was accidentally shot by a comrade while on active service in Afghanistan. Lance Corporal Michael Pritchard, 22, from Eastbourne, East Sussex, was killed by a gunshot wound to the chest and abdomen fired from a remote observation post, known as a sangar, by Lance Corporal Malcolm Graham, of The Royal Scots Borderers, 1st Battalion, who thought he was shooting at Taliban insurgents, an inquest at Eastbourne Town Hall was told. LCpl Pritchard, who was on secondment with 4th Battalion The Rifles, was deployed to the observation post N30 on 20th December 2009 to watch a blind spot on an access road, Route 611, in the Sangin area, central Helmand province, to make sure Taliban insurgents did not plant improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in the road, the court was told. East Sussex Coroner Alan Craze said a number of factors including poor communication had played a part but that the basic reason for the tragedy was in fact the failure of the organisation which would have prevented blue on blue contact. Speaking outside court, LCpl Pritchard's father Gary said: "We hope and trust that the Army will take steps to ensure that this does not happen again." Mr Craze said that despite erroneous decisions being made LCpl Pritchard's death was an accident, albeit an avoidable one. BREAKING NEWS :Obama lays out NATO's Afghanistan plan
NATO leaders signed off Monday on President Barack Obama's exit strategy from Afghanistan that calls for an end to combat operations next year and the withdrawal of the US-led international military force by the end of 2014. Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen told reporters at the conclusion of a two-day summit of the alliance leaders that the plan calls for handing over security responsibilities to Afghan forces in 2013, then withdrawing foreign forces the following year. After that, a new and different NATO mission will advise, train and assist the expected 350000-strong Afghanistan force, Rasmussen said. The plan is backed by Afghan President Hamid Karzai, who sat down Monday to speak exclusively with CNN's Wolf Blitzer. TIME: Obama's Afghanistan problem: the Afghans "We have finalized plans so 2014 will be a year in which the United States will not be spending as much money in Afghanistan as it is spending today. It will save money and we will be providing security ourselves," he said. "That transition and the eventual withdrawal in 2014 of the US forces and other NATO forces from Afghanistan is good for Afghanistan and good for our allied countries." Obama said NATO leaders were leaving Chicago with "a clear road map" to bring the war in Afghanistan to a "responsible end." "I don't think that there's ever going to be an optimal point where we say -- this is all done, this is perfect, this is just the way we wanted it and now we can wrap up all our equipment and ...

There's been a surge of violence in Afghanistan - with bomb blast in the north of the country killing at least nine people. The escalation comes as the country prepares to take full control of security in more areas - and a week before NATO's summit in Chicago. And, as Tesa Arcilla reports, Alliance support for ongoing involvement in the embattled nation has never been lower. Afghan Massacre Sheds Light on Culture of Mania and Aggression in US Troops in Afghanistan
democracynow.org - We speak with journalist Neil Shea, who has reported on Afghanistan and Iraq since 2006 for the Stars and Stripes and other publications. Shea discusses his experiences witnessing disturbing behavior during his travels with US troops in Afghanistan and offers insight into understanding the massacre of 16 Afghan civilians. "When we cycle our soldiers and Marines through wars that don't really have a clear purpose over years and years, we expect light-switch control over their aggression," Shea says. "We expect to be able to turn them into killers and then turn them back into winners of hearts and minds. When you do that to a man or a woman over many years, that light-switch control begins to fray."
