Somalia's al-Shabab meet their match
Somalia has a new militia faction that is about the only group in the country to go against the al-Shabab and win. The Ahlu Sunnah Wal Jama - followers of Sufism or mystical Islam - are mostly volunteering students who say they have no political ambitions beyond expelling al-Shabab from the capital, one district at a time. Al Jazeera's Mohammed Adow has this exclusive report from Mogadishu.

Al-Shabab mark Eid in Mogadishu
Al-Shabab, Somalia's Islamist rebel group, have given Al Jazeera exclusive access to film them in Mogadishu during the end of Ramadan. Despite their withdrawal from the capital, they say the move is purely tactical and they were able to celebrate Eid in the city. Shabab members told Al Jazeera that the group remains "fully in control" in some parts of the capital and that they have secretly infiltrated others. Al Jazeera's Rosie Garthwaite reports.

AU troops battle al-Shabab in outer Mogadishu
Somali government forces and African Union troops have launched a new offensive against Islamist fighters in Mogadishu. There has been heavy fighting in the capital as they try to seize positions held by Al Shabab rebel fighters. Al Jazeera's Liz Dunkerley reports.

Shabab claim deadly Somalia suicide bombing
The armed Islamist movement al-Shabab has claimed responsibility for a Wednesday car bombing in the Somali capital that killed at least 11 people and wounded at least 34. Shabab said the target was a restaurant near the Hotel Muna frequented by members of parliament, government officials and intelligence personnel. The group attacked the same restaurant in 2010, killing 30 people. Al Jazeera's Omar al-Saleh reports.

During a violent five-hour clash between Palestinian youths and Israeli special forces at the Qalandia checkpoint between Ramallah and Jerusalem, 20 Palestinians were injured and Israeli troops experimented with two unusual weapons. Israeli soldiers used an acoustic, vehicle-mounted device called The Scream to disperse protestors as well as a new type of tear gas, which eyewitnesses told Palestinian official news wire Wafa was more toxic than usual. Six protestors were injured by Israeli gunfire and an additional 14 were hospitalized for tear gas inhalation. Shortly before noon, Israeli soldiers shot an unnamed 15-year-old in the eye with a rubber-coated steel bullet from a distance of 25 meters. He was taken to a Ramallah hospital, where it was confirmed he lost his eye. The boy, as well as many others at the demonstration, was throwing rocks and bottles at the soldiers, who in violation of their own open-fire regulations shot from close range. Four other Palestinians were shot and an international solidarity activist was shot in his ear. Three Palestinians--one from Jenin, one from Nablus, and one from Ramallah--were arrested by plainclothes Israeli troops. African Union denies Al Shabab's claims of peacekeepers killing
The African Union has rejected Al Shabab's claims that its fighters killed more than 70 AU peacekeepers in Somalia. The group has displayed the bodies in an area outside of the capital Mogadishu. Al Jazeera's Peter Greste's report from Nairobi. Warning: the report contains some disturbing images.

Al-Shabab recruiting Kenyan youths to fight
Al Jazeera has spoken to the parents of Kenyan youth recruited by the Islamist group al-Shabab to fight in Somalia. Nobody is sure how many Kenyans al-Shabab have recruited, many coming from slums in the capital Nairobi. But people who have been watching the process believe it runs into the hundreds, with only a handful of them are from ethnic Somali communities. The vast majority of the recruits are from other tribes across Kenya, and that makes it much harder for the authorities to spot. Kenya's military has been battling the fighters inside Somalia, and now the families of the youths recruited by al-Shabab say they fear retaliation. Al Jazeera's Peter Greste reports from Nairobi.

Somalia: Victory Over Al Shabab
Somalia: Victory Over Al Shabab On August 6th, Somali President Sheikh Sharif Ahmed said his military has gained victory over the Al Shabab group wanting to topple his Western-supported government after the Islamist rebels began pulling out fighters from the capital, Mogadishu. The militant's spokesman, Sheikh Ali Mohamoud Rage, rejected the claim of defeat, and justified their withdrawal as a tactical one, and that they had positions elsewhere in the country. Because the Al-Qaeda affiliated Al Shabab never really left Mogadishu, this instance raises suspicions on possible rifts among the group's senior commanders which resulted in the split. However President Ahmed stressed that people who fled the unrest should not rush back until the neighborhoods have been cleared of explosives left by the militants.
