Roadtrip through the Western Pamirs, Tajikistan (2007)
Traveller's Teacup Sept 2007 - The Tajikistan Pamirs are an incredibly remote part of the world. To get there you either need to drive for 16 hours from Dushanbe (capital city), on a road that makes a milkshake seem tame or you can take a tiny plane that doesn't quite get up above 6000m cliff faces. Despite the horror stories, the flight was worth it. Looking out the window to the south, the Hindu Kush mountain range of Afghanistan was clearly visible and at times too close! After notably fuelling the car in Khorog for our 600km journey, we took off South towards the Wakhan Valley. This fertile valley has been inhabited and used as a Silk road trade route for centuries and is littered with archaeological markers. Age old petroglyphs, 3rd century BC Forts, Buddhist stupas and hermit caves, Islamic mausoleums, and burnt out army tanks document the valley's colourful history. This valley straddles the Tajiki-Afghani border and looking right across the Pyanj river is Afghanistan and the magnificent Hindu Kush. Famously known as the Wakhan Corridor, it was divvied up as a "no-mans land" by Britain and Russia during the Great Game era. Today, it is a border heavily guarded for obvious reasons including drug trafficking. The Tajiki side of the road is maintained but at points little more than a steep bumpy mountain track (I hope the footage doesn't make you too seasick!). The local people are mountain farmers who get around in 4wd jeeps and constantly breaking down trucks. The ...

Tajikistan and Tajiks
Tajikistan is a mountainous landlocked country in Central Asia. Afghanistan borders it to the south, Uzbekistan to the west, Kyrgyzstan to the north, and People's Republic of China to the east. Tajikistan also lies adjacent to Pakistan but is separated by the narrow Wakhan Corridor. Most of Tajikistan's population belongs to the Tajik ethnic group, who share culture and history with Afghanistan and speak the Persian language (officially referred to as Tajiki in Tajikistan). Once part of the Samanid Empire, Tajikistan became a constituent republic of the Soviet Union in the 20th century, known as the Tajik Soviet Socialist Republic (Tajik SSR). Mountains cover over 90% of this Central Asian republic. After independence, Tajikistan suffered from a devastating civil war which lasted from 1992 to 1997. Since the end of the war, newly established political stability and foreign aid have allowed the country's economy to grow. Trade in commodities such as cotton and aluminium wire has contributed greatly to this steady improvement.

Isroil - Mussofir Pisar Tajik shashMaqam
Shashmaqam is the best known of a pleiades of classical vocal and instrumental repertories that flourished in the great cities of Central Asia: Samarkand, Bukhara, Khujand Tashkent, Khiva, Qoqand. The roots of Shashmaqam are linked most strongly with historically multicultural cities where performers and audiences have included Tajiks, Uzbeks, and Central Asian (Bukharan) Jews. With its Sufi-inspired texts, lyrical melodies, and austere instrumental accompaniment, Shashmaqam comprises music of great refinement and profound beauty that spans the entire gamut of traditional social life, from prayer to dance. Transformed during the Soviet era into a cantata-like genre performed by a choir and small orchestra of indigenous instruments, Shashmaqam is presently undergoing a restoration whose vitality comes from the rediscovery and reanimation of older, more authentic performance styles. In Tajikistan, the leader of this movement is Abduvali Abdurashidov, who, with support from the Aga Khan Music Initiative in Central Asia (AKMICA), created his Academy of Shashmaqam to offer rigorous training to a highly select group of talented young performers. By reducing his ensemble to the essentials a few voices, frame drum, and two or three long-necked lutes, including the rarely heard sato (bowed tanbur) Abdurashidov achieves a remarkable clarity of texture and suppleness of form. His work instills new life in one of the great musical traditions of the Islamic world, and confirms the ...

Tajiks of China (Gulibita)
Tajik (Persian: تاجيک Tājīk; Tajik: Тоҷик ) is a general designation for a wide range of Persian-speaking peoples of Iranian origin with traditional homelands in present-day Afghanistan, Tajikistan, and southern Uzbekistan. Smaller numbers also live in Iran and Pakistan; they are mostly refugees from Afghanistan. The Tajiks of China, although known by the name Tajik, speak Eastern Iranian languages and are distinct from Persian Tajiks. The music is a Chinese Tajik song, "Gulibita" (direct translation from the sound). It's a girl's name. The lyric says, Gulibita, you are so beautiful that even the prettiest flower could not match your beauty, and there is no word available on this world that could describe your beauty. I will reach you, even if I have to across the dessert and sand storms, even if I have to risk my own life. See also my "Uigurs of China" at www.youtube.com

Tajik singer Feruza -- Delam Gom shoda -- Tajiks make up half of the population in Afghanistan but they will take it as an insult to be called afghan or afghani since the name afghan is an imposed name by the british. Tajiks are Khorasani Farsiban Ariaye
Feruza Tajik singer - Delam Gom shoda ... Tajiks make up 50% of Afghanistan's population but they are not Afghan or Afghani since Afghan is the name of Pashtuns, a minority ethnic group in southern afghanistan. Its an offense to refer to a Tajik Afghanistani as an afghan or afghani, Tajiks of Afghanistan refer to themselves as Parsizaban, Tajik, Farsiwan, Khorasani, Ariaye, etc. but not afghan or afghani since afghan is not only the name of another ethnic group which was imposed on khorasan by the british in late 19th century, but also afghan is the embodiment of everything that is evil and bad today. Terrorism and terrorist, drug dealing and drug smuggling, opium cultivation, pedophile, suicide bombing, women beating and savagery is what Afghan is known for today so no one with a common sense would associate himself with this filthy name.
