As Afghanistan prepares to go to the polls, three major ethnic groups in the north of the country - the Tajiks, the Uzbeks and the Hazara - are vying for a key role in local and national politics. Each group is looking for the candidate who is likely to bolster their status by granting them more privileges and powers. Afghanistan's misdirected security-led aid - 12 Jun 08

Suicide bomber strikes Afghan ministry
At least two people killed and three others injured in a suicide attack inside Afghan Defence Ministry in Kabul. Monday's attack was the third major strike inside an Afghan security force compound in four days. The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack. Afghan tensions rise amid civilian and CIA deaths - 01 Jan 010
Afghanistan's government has stepped up its criticism over the number of Afghan civilians killed by Nato strikes. In the latest incident, eight people died in Helmand province and the government has demanded that foreign troops responsible for civilian deaths be handed over to Afghan authorities. The civilian deaths and political fallout come amid confirmation by the CIA that seven of its agents were killed in a suicide attack at a US base in Afghanistan the agency's worst one-day loss of life in eight years. The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack, saying the bomber was an Afghan army officer who volunteered for the operation. Al Jazeera's Hashem Ahelbarra reports.

Afghan villagers protest 'Nato killings'
Residents in southern Afghanistan are accusing Nato and Afghan troops of killing 13 civilians after opening fire on a group of demonstrators. Nato insists the only person killed was a sniper.
