Hashem Ahelbarra reports from Bamako
The Tuareg rebel group, the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad- the MNLA, has declared an independent state in Northern Mali. They're calling it Azawad. In a statement on their website, the MNLA said the decision was "irreversible". Al Jazeera's Hashem Ahelbarra reports from the Malian capital Bamako.

Syria's military has withdrawn from residential areas and is on the outskirts of the country's cities, but gunfire continues and snipers are still a threat, according to the secretary-general of the Arab League. Nabil El-Araby said on Monday that security forces have not stopped shooting at protesters in Syria, despite the presence of an Arab League observer mission in the country. Al Jazeera's Hashem Ahelbarra is in Antakya, on Turkey's border with Syria for the very latest.

George Bush in Saudi Arabia - 14 Jan 08
George Bush has arrived in Saudi Arabia on the sixth day of his tour of the Middle East. The US president hopes to get Saudi backing for his Israeli-Palestinian peace plans, as well as added pressure against Iran. Yemen: Update on elections in Sanaa

Child refugees at risk in Somalia - 06 May 2008
Al Jazeera's Hashem Ahelbarra reports from the refugee camps of Yemen on the people fleeing the fighting in Somalia. Last year more than 100000 people made the perilous journey across the Gulf of Aden to Yemen in order to flee the fighting in Somalia - according to the figures given by the Yemen Observer newspaper. This year 32000 others have joined them in order to escape too. However it is estimated that one in 20 did not survive the trip. Amnesty International issued a warning in a new report that 90000 children could die in Somalia in the coming months.

Yemen bomb leads to clashes with Shia fighters - 3 May 2008
Al Jazeera's Hashem Ahelbarra reports on the government troops reported to have clashed with Shia fighters in northern Yemen, hours after a mosque was bombed. Funerals are being held for the 18 worshippers killed, who included soldiers from a nearby barracks. The attack in Sa'ada adds to the thousands already killed in a four year conflict. It also throws into a doubt a peace deal revived earlier this year.

Arab League observers 'saw snipers' in Syria

Honey remains big business in Yemen
Honey has been a valuable commodity for centuries, but few places have a stronger tradition of honey-making than Yemen, where beehives dot the country's landscape. But the once-thriving honey business suffered a setback after the September 11, 2001, attacks on the US, when the Bush administration listed Yemeni honey stores as possible fronts for al-Qaeda.
