Major parties today (February 6) took strong exception to demands in the UK for stopping aid to India, with opposition BJP saying that the country did not require such help and should give a befitting reply to the "arrogance" of a section of the British political class by refusing it. India's most populous state goes to the polls
Uttar Pradesh, India's most populous state, is going to the polls on Wednesday to pick members of the state government. A sixth of the country's voters live in the state and how they vote locally matters nationally. The state has 80 seats in the national parliament, and a good showing here is crucial for the national ruling coalition's grip on power. The election is also being seen as a mid-term report card on the country's federal government which has been accused of corruption. Al Jazeera's Sohail Rahman reports from Noida.

Indian regional polls to test public mood
Millions of people will head to the polls in India's most populous state, Uttar Pradesh, to vote for provincial representatives on Wednesday. The elections are seen as an indicator of public sentiment about the government, but many voters, especially those known as the Dalits or "untouchables", do not have much trust in government to better their living conditions. Those voters are unhappy about the prospects for receiving benefits they had been promised in previous elections. Al Jazeera's Prerna Suri reports from Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh.
