He's a lawyer and was forced to flee Iran after defending Sakineh Ashtiani from death by stoning. Still defiant despite exile, he speaks here. "If freedom of speech existed in Iran, I would never have left", Mohammed bluntly says. He was forced to flee his country six weeks ago for defending Sakineh Ashtiani, the allegedly adulterous woman sentenced to death by stoning. He has saved at least 50 people from execution in Iran, but finally could stand no more when the Iranian authorities threw his wife into a notorious Tehran prison. Now reunited, they both continue to campaign for Sakineh and the many others languishing in Iranian prisons. As Feresteh, Mohammed's wife says, "to move forward, our country must engage in struggle, the struggle of individuals like Mohammed". We can only hope that the struggle will pay off. The House of Representatives passed its version of the bill in December and now the Senate and House must work out their differences in the legislation. The West suspects Iran is working to build a nuclear bomb and the sanctions are meant to strip Tehran of revenue by shutting down financial deals with Iran's powerful state oil and tanker enterprises. Iran has said its nuclear program is for civilian purposes. In a statement from Republican Senator Mark Kirk, a co-author of the bill, he states that the Senate put Iranian leaders on notice that they must halt all uranium enrichment activities or face another round of economic sanctions from the United States. tags: News, Senate, Sanctions, Iran, il_cat:politics, il_id:522, il_l:en Mothers Day in Iran-Iran-05-13-2012 Women's day is celebrated throughout the world and so is in Iran. On this day, men try their best to please their wives and so do children as this day is also mother's day. Buying present, going out for dinner, or simply congratulating women on this day, is a reminder of how special they are. We'll take a look at how Iranians express their gratitude to their mothers and wives. tags: News, Press TV, Women's day, Mother's Day, Iran, Iranian Tradition, Fatima, mothers, wives Turkey ups Iran oil imports despite sanctions Turkey has sharply increased its oil imports from Iran. The next day, he visited Abu Musa, a small island situated between two others, the Lesser Tunb and Greater Tunb. The United Arab Emirates wasn't happy about this, and recalled its ambassador for consultation. Even a friendly football match that was supposed to be held on the 17th of April between Iran and the UAE was canceled. On the same day the US foreign ministry spokesman Mark Turner said Washington supported the referral of the case to The International Court of Justice. He also called on Iran to agree to direct talks with the UAE on the matter. The Persian Gulf Cooperation Council held a meeting immediately after Ahmadinejad's visit, condemning it as a violation of the UAE's national sovereignty. Regarding the ownership of the Lesser Tunb and Greater Tunb, Iran says there is nothing to talk about, they belong to Iran, but as a good will gesture Tehran says it will sit down to talks to resolve any misunderstandings that might have occurred. Political wrangling between Iran and the UAE over the Lesser Tunb and Greater Tunb and especially Abu Musa, has increased in recent years. Since 1971 when British forces pulled out of this island, the Iranian government announced that Abu Musa is part of Iran, and asserted that claim by sending troops there.
