Fight erupts in Ukrainian parliament over language bil
A violent scuffle has erupted in Ukraine's parliament over a bill that would allow the use of the Russian language in courts, hospitals and other institutions in the Russian-speaking regions of the country. The fight broke out Thursday evening between members of the pro-Western opposition who want to take Ukraine out of Russia's shadow and lawmakers from President Viktor Yanukovych's party, which bases its support in Ukraine's Russian-speaking east. At least one legislator, opposition lawmaker Mykola Petruk, suffered an apparent blow to the head and was taken to the hospital with blood streaming down his face. The opposition demanded an investigation. Ukraine is deeply divided into the Russian-speaking east and south, which favors close ties with Moscow, and the Ukrainian-speaking west, which wants Ukraine to join the Western club.

George Carlin on Soft Language
George Carlin talks about soft language from the special Doin' It Again. If not 'THE', certainly one of the best comedians ever. RIP George 1937-2008 (this cut out for a second during the upload somehow, so no this was not intentionally edited. This notation will probably not be read by many considering how most people don't take the time to read descriptions and welcome any opportunity to hear themselves spew 'verbal diarrhea')

Stephen Fry Kinetic Typography - Language
UPDATE 24/05/2011:Thankyou to @hedgehoglet for the Russian Subtitles UPDATE 11/10/2010: Thanks to Stephen Fry for mentioning this video on his twitter account, rather exciting! Follow me at @RogersCreations on twitter Using the wonderful words of acclaimed writer, actor and allround know it all (I mean that in the best of ways) Stephen Fry I have created this kinetic typography animation. If you like what you hear you can download the rest of the audio file from Mr. Fry's website. stephenfry.com and then go to the audio and video section at the top of the page and look for the file entitled language. You can also find the file on iTunes by searching the name 'Stephen Fry's Podgrams'. I loved this particular essay on language and I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to make my first kinetic typography video. I hope you like it and even if you dont I would like to heard what you think in the comments section. Also I know that at points the audio does not match the text so you do not have to write that. It is because I copied the transcript off of Stephen's website and it was not 100% exactly what he said and i did not notice until I was well underway. However these cases are few and far between. Just incase you were wondering the programs I used to make this were all by Adobe. Mostly After Effects but also Flash and Illustrator. Flash for the changing background colour transitions and illustrator for putting the words in to the shape of 'language' before loading it ...

The English Language In 24 Accents
Me attempting to do 24 different accents from my own country and from other countries around the world. Hopefully I got most of them right but I may have made mistakes and I can do some better than others. However, I made this video for my friends because I promised them I would do an accent video. I mean no offence to anyone and please don't be upset if I have not included your specific accent or got it wrong. Please enable and read the annotations too, as they explain a few things. Also please note that I learned most of these accents randomly off of TV, movies and video games over the years and some can be very stereotypical. And yes, I am filming in the garden shed lol as its more quiet in there.

Speaking in Tongues: The History of Language - Episode # 1 Let There Be Words
Speaking in Tongues: The History of Langauge - Episode # 1 - Let There Be Words preview. What precisely is language, and how did humans acquire it? In an effort to answer those essential questions, this program journeys back to prehistoric times in search of languages origin. But this is not a passive discussion, as Noam Chomsky; Brown Universitys Philip Lieberman; Johanna Nichols, of UC Berkeley; Stanford Universitys Merritt Ruhlen; professor of anthropology Richard Klein; Nobel physicist Murray Gell-Mann; and others passionately defend their points of view. Additional topics include distinguishing features of human communication and what humankinds first utterances may have been. The early evolution and migration of humans is also considered. What is Language?
This lecture focuses on language itself. It asks many questions. What is Language? How do we acquire and use language? Do we exist inside/outside of language? The word is the beginning and the end, so where do we fit in to the word. Ferdinand de Saussure, linguist, and Jacques Lacan, psychologist, help us explore the subjective and objective realities of the word and our relationship to it. Enjoy this introduction to the nature of "The Word."

In My Language
The first part is in my "native language," and then the second part provides a translation, or at least an explanation. This is not a look-at-the-autie gawking freakshow as much as it is a statement about what gets considered thought, intelligence, personhood, language, and communication, and what does not.

Why are humans the only species to have language? Is there something special about our brains? Are there genes that have evolved for language? In this talk, Jeff Elman, UCSD professor of cognitive science and co-director of the Kavli Institute for Brain and Mind, discusses some of the exciting new research that helps us understand what it is about human language that is so different from other animals' communication systems, and what about our biology might make language possible.
