Tajikistan and Tajiks
Tajikistan is a mountainous landlocked country in Central Asia. Afghanistan borders it to the south, Uzbekistan to the west, Kyrgyzstan to the north, and People's Republic of China to the east. Tajikistan also lies adjacent to Pakistan but is separated by the narrow Wakhan Corridor. Most of Tajikistan's population belongs to the Tajik ethnic group, who share culture and history with Afghanistan and speak the Persian language (officially referred to as Tajiki in Tajikistan). Once part of the Samanid Empire, Tajikistan became a constituent republic of the Soviet Union in the 20th century, known as the Tajik Soviet Socialist Republic (Tajik SSR). Mountains cover over 90% of this Central Asian republic. After independence, Tajikistan suffered from a devastating civil war which lasted from 1992 to 1997. Since the end of the war, newly established political stability and foreign aid have allowed the country's economy to grow. Trade in commodities such as cotton and aluminium wire has contributed greatly to this steady improvement.

Influx of Afghan refugees worries Tajiks
Life in Tajikistan, although fairly stable and calm compared with neighbouring Afghanistan, is not easy, especially for its refugee population which mostly compose of Afghans fleeing war in their country. While already struggling to overcome the consequences of a civil war in which 100000 people were killed 10 years ago, Tajikistan is the poorest state in the Soviet bloc and is ill equipped to accommodate the influx. The International Crisis Group think tank has described it as a country on the road to becoming a failed state, yet it is the only ex-Soviet Central Asian country to officially admit Afghan refugees. Official data have yet to be released but the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) says the number of Afghan refugees in Tajikistan is expected to have doubled last year to 5000. This year the number is expected to grow to up to 7000. Al Jazeera's Robin Forestier Walker reports on why many Tajiks see this influx as a threat to their jobs.

The Ethnologue claims that they are actually Shugni and Wakhi, distinct from the West Iranian Persian-speaking Tajiks of Tajikistan. Aurel Stein and other writers from his time referred to them simply as Sarikoli.Some have referred to them simply as "Mountain Tajiks."[6] Robert Shaw considered them Sarikolis and Wakhis, referring to them collectively as Ghalchah.

Terrorism and terrorist, drug dealing and drug smuggling, opium cultivation, pedophile, suicide bombing, women beating and savagery is what Afghan is known for today so no one with a common sense would associate himself with this filthy name.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union Tajikistan has seen a trend toward the reinforcement of traditional family values. According to Andrea Strasser-Camagni, Amnesty Internationals Tajikistan expert, these values see women treated as servants, or as the in-laws family property and lead to tragic outcomes, including suicide as a way of escape. Featuring interviews with survivors of domestic violence and womens rights activists, the video explores the physical, psychological and sexual abuse that women face at the hands of their husbands, partners and other family members.

Driving along the Afghan border in Tajikistan with Peregrine Adventures, we came across a Wakhan Valley village staging a music, singing and dancing show. The dancers were from the capital Dushanbe and were there to celebrate and warm up the village for the imminent arrival of the Tajikistan President. He arrived the next day. There was an official cameraman there -perhaps the footage would be spliced in with the presidential visit for Tajik state TV. The whole village was present, all the women and children looking from one side and from atop a wall along the roadway before the 'stage', the men to the other side. Locals got up and danced alongside the performers occasionally too. I doubt this kind of dancing is still allowed across the river in Afghanistan, where a large population of ethnic Tajiks live.
